Why cats need vertical space, and how to pick a cat tree

Cats like to watch the room from above. A perch gives them a safe spot to rest, a lookout, and somewhere to retreat from a busy household or other pets.

Look for stability first

A tall tree that wobbles will not get used. Check the size and weight of the base, and anchor taller trees to the wall when the instructions include a strap.

Pick the right height

Young, active cats enjoy taller towers. Senior cats often prefer lower platforms or steps that are easy on their joints.

Give them something to scratch

Sisal-wrapped posts give claws a better target than your sofa. Place the tree near where your cat already scratches, and reward them when they use it.

Put it where life happens

A tree by a window or in the room where your family spends time gets used far more than one tucked away in a corner your cat never visits.
