A bed that is too small gets ignored, and one that is too big can feel exposed to a dog that likes to curl up. Getting the size right takes about two minutes.
1. Measure your dog asleep
Wait until your dog is lying in their usual sleeping position, then measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Note the width across the shoulders too.
2. Add room to move
Add 6 to 10 inches to the length. Dogs that sprawl or sleep on their side need the full 10. Curlers can sit at the lower end.
3. Match the shape to the sleeper
- Curlers like round or donut beds with raised edges to rest their head on.
- Sprawlers do best on flat mattresses or orthopedic pads with even support.
- Burrowers want a hood, a cave bed or a blanket to dig under.
4. Think about the floor and the wash
A non-slip base keeps the bed in place on wood and tile. A removable, machine-washable cover makes hair and accidents much easier to deal with.
